Institute of Linguists Educational Trust

The Institute of Linguists is the leading professional language body in the UK with over 6,500 members. Founded in 1910 with the aim of promoting high standards in the use of foreign languages in industry and commerce, the Institute has been providing recognised language qualifications for over 80 years. Today it promotes languages throughout educational, professional and commercial life in the United Kingdom, Europe and other parts of the world.

The Institute offers public examinations in a wide range of languages for both the general and specialist user. The examinations have been developed to meet the needs of industry, commerce and the public services; they are occupationally relevant and provide an instant indicator of language proficiency.

The examinations of the Institute are being submitted for accreditation by the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority and for inclusion in the National Framework of Qualifications.
The Institute of Linguists' Examination Board, under the auspices of the Institute of Linguists Educational Trust, has overall responsibility for the Institute's examinations.

What is the Diploma in Translation?

The Diploma is a professional qualification at postgraduate level for translators who have reached a high level of linguistic skills and wish to embark on a career in translation, or for professional translators who want to 'validate' their skills.

Why was the Diploma developed?

The Diploma was introduced in 1989 as a benchmark of professional standards. By setting those standards, the Diploma gives the translating profession a more formal structure and framework in which to operate. Potential clients of translators can now clearly see who is, and who is not, appropriately qualified.

Where is the Diploma recognised?

The Diploma is the qualification that translation agencies in the UK demand from translators before they will accept them onto their books. Standards for professional translators have been set by the Languages National Training Organisation for the Qualifications and Curriculum Authority. The Institute of Linguists is a major awarding body wich is able to award a National Vocational Level 5 Qualification in Translation. The Diploma in Translation enjoys the same level of recognition world wide, as demonstrated by the fact that candidates sit the examination as afar as Hong Kong and South America, as well as in many countries in Europe.

What does the Diploma consist of?

The Diploma examination consists of three translation papers, one of a general text and two of semi-specialised texts. Candidates have the option of sitting all three papers on the same day or of sitting,  Paper 1, and waiting for the results of a pass before being allowed to sit the other papers at a subsequent session.

What are the specialised options?

Paper 1 is a translation of a general text of approximately 600 words of a demanding but non-specialised nature which must also be annotated (i.e. the candidate must discuss specific points arising from the original text which present difficulties to the translator - problems of lexis, style, idiom, etc.). Papers 2 and 3 are semi-specialised in that the texts of up to 450 words fall into one of the following categories:
PAPER 2   A Technology B Business C Literature
PAPER 3  D Science E Humanities
Candidates are able to choose which papers they wish to translate during the course of the examination.
As of 2001, a Social Science paper will replace Humanities and a Law option will be added to Paper 3.

What is the level of the Diploma?

The Diploma is set at postgraduate level and is intended to test the candidate's ability of translating to a professional standard and their awareness of the professional translator's task.

What are the entry requirements?

Entry is available to candidates with a level of linguistic competence at least equivalent to a good Honours Degree in languages. Candidates usually sit the examination for translation into their native language.

When do the examinations take place?

The examinations are held in January of each year. Registration deadline is on the preceding 31 July.

Are there courses available?

The Institute is able to provide information about courses leading to the examination. Candidates are advised that those holding a degree in a language but with little professional translating experience generally require additional experience or training. Information is also available on distance learning courses.

What is Membership of the Institute?

Successful candidates are entitled to use the designation 'DipTransIoL' and are eligible to apply for membership of the Institute. Full details are sent out to every successful candidate.
Membership of the Institute entails observation of a code of ethics, subject to a Disciplinary Board, which covers such issues as confidentiality, impartiality, recognition of professional limitations, etc.
The benefits of membership include reduced rates for professional indemnity insurance, a bi-monthly professional journal, a forum for professional debate, participation in regional and divisional activities, a specialist library and listing in the Institute's membership database.

Abendstudium

Die Gebühren für das Abendstudium (und für die ein- oder zweimal pro Woche stattfindenden Vormittagskurse) werden auf der Grundlage der belegten Unterrichtsstunden pro Woche (Wochenstunden) berechnet. Dabei ist es nicht erheblich, welche Sprache(n) man belegt. Die Gebühren gelten bei einer Einschreibung über unbestimmte Zeit, aber mindestens 6 Monate.

Es wird eine Einschreibgebühr von € 5 erhoben. Die Gebühren für Kurzeinschreibungen (weniger als 6 Monate) erfragen Sie bitte im Sekretariat.

Intensivkurse

Die Gebühren der Intensivkurse, 4-Wochen-Kurse, Sonderkurse, Firmenkurse sowie für Einzelunterricht und Minigruppen entnehmen Sie bitte den entsprechenden Tabellen auf unseren Seiten für Englisch, Französisch, Spanisch, Italienisch sowie Deutsch.

Je mehr Studenten zusammen in einer Gruppe lernen desto weniger Zeit hat der Lehrer, auf die Anforderungen der einzelnen Schüler individuell einzugehen. Deshalb legen wir Wert auf eine moderate Gruppengröße und begrenzen unsere Gruppen auf maximal 12 Teilnehmer. Im Vergleich zu anderen Schulen in Berlin ist das Spitzenklasse.

Wenn Sie in einer noch kleineren Gruppe lernen wollen, dann finden Sie bestimmt ein passendes Angebot unter Minigruppe n. In unserem Einzelunterricht wird ein Schüler von einem Lehrer - natürlich wie immer ein Muttersprachler - ausgebildet und in kürzester Zeit zu Lernerfolgen geführt, die so in keiner anderen Lehrumgebung erreicht werden. Wir stellen den Einzelunterricht flexibel auf den Studenten ein, insbesondere  auf Vorkenntnisse, Lernziele, Einsatzfelder und natürlich Zeit und Ort des Unterrichts.

Ein Intensivkurs dient dem kurzfristigen, intensiven Erwerb der Grundkenntnisse einer Fremdsprache (Anfänger) bzw. Vervollkommnung der Kenntnisse (Auffrischung).
