For those who want to discover more about German culture and the German way-of-life, Berlin is ideal. A German course in Berlin provides the potential for a really special experience.

Politics and Culture

Where better to sample German culture than in the nation’s capital. Berlin has a unique place in the history of Germany and in terms of twentieth-century history in general. For Germans, the city has come to represent a very volatile and formative era in this country’s recent history - it symbolises what we have experienced and what we are aspiring to achieve. Berlin is full of culture and historical significance, but at the same time it is the thriving hub of a modern and progressive Germany, with an energetic atmosphere to show for it.

History

Berlin is home to the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, the well-known Tiergarten park, as well as the last vestiges of the infamous Berlin Wall. These are some of the historical sites that you will no doubt become familiar with during your stay here. But history in Berlin is not something you will have to try desperately hard to acquaint yourself with, rather is it something you will be seamlessly exposed to and experience for yourself: it is not just a history that you will merely observe, it is something you will live and breathe!

Arts and Culture

As you can soon see for yourself, Berlin has much to offer outside of its politics and heritage. It is also, of course, home to an exciting and buoyant arts and cultural scene. Berlin has long been renowned for its adventurous and stylish avant-garde culture that tests the bounds of contemporary art, especially in theatre and the visual arts. Now, this has been furthered by recent political developments to stimulate a new, dynamic fusion between East and West. Whether it is the opera, musicals, comedy shows, alternative theatre, art houses, museums or one of the many other things on offer here in Berlin, you are bound to find something to suit your mood. If you are feeling a little inquisitive, it is more than likely that you will be able to discover something utterly new to expand your horizons in one of Europe’s most exciting capitals.

There is so much to discover for yourself, but museums such as the Pergamon, Haus am Checkpoint Charlie, the new Jewish Museum and even the ‘art mile’ on Auguststrasse in Berlin-Mitte are all good places to start.

City Life

Life here is fast-paced. It is a city that never sleeps. Discover for yourself why Berlin’s nightlife is world famous. Berliners have a reputation throughout Germany for being wild and provocative, and for being driven by a ceaseless, restless energy. At night, the many cafés, bars, clubs and discos reveal a young and vibrant side of Berlin.

But, at the same time, there is more than enough here to provide you with an opportunity to escape and relax, whether in the many parks throughout the city or a little further afield in the great park around Sanssouci chateau in historical Potsdam, or even by the sleepy shores of Wannsee lake.

Or take a short U-Bahn ride out to the stunning, newly refurbished Olympic Stadium - hugely relevant both for its involvement in the 2006 FIFA World Cup.

Berlin also provides much in the way of shopping. The Akademie is just a few minutes walk from the prestigious Kurfuerstendamm and Tauentzien streets, with the great KaDeWe department store and other retail outlets for most of the world’s international designer labels. If you want something a little more unique, however, there are countless stores of a more individual and specialist nature throughout Berlin.

The school is always happy to offer suggestions and provide information about up-and-coming events and activities in Berlin.

We can also provide you with discounts on public transport in the city (all buses, trams, U-Bahn and S-Bahn trains). This is superb value and also, in a city as large as Berlin, extremely useful!
